Hide AdA Ferrero spokesman, on behalf of Thorntons, said: “ Like any retailer, we are continuously reviewing our store estate to ensure we are in the locations that meet our customer needs.
“As a result of such a review, the decision was taken to close the store at Scarborough.
“Currently, 13 staff members are employed at the store and we are looking to find them other employment opportunities where possible.
“Thorntons has been delighted to serve our many local customers over the years and we would encourage them to shop for their favourite Thorntons products at our York store, or online in the future.”

Hide AdCllr Janet Jefferson, who is president of Scarborugh and District Chamber of Trade and Commerce, said “It was going to close a couple of years ago. It was always a concern for us. It leaves quite a big gap in the high street.
“It is a casualty of its own success, they’re selling through other retailers in supermarkets. It raises the issue of business rates somewhere along the line we have to look through the government.”
